Wild Morgy Photography Shirt Design
Illustration/Photoshop
Overview
Morgan Hutcheson, a gifted photographer, was born in Georgia but swiftly made her way to Texas. From a young age, she found joy in the creepy crawlers, snakes, and all manner of creatures that most people shy away from. That's not to say her lens doesn't capture a broad spectrum of other beloved animals that roam our earth. (Seriously, go check out her work to see for yourself.) Hutcheson’s passion has taken her to places like Zimbabwe, where she has photographed magnificent wildlife, as well as stunning landscapes from around the world. When she approached me with an idea for a t-shirt design, I was thrilled to help bring her vision to life and support her growing photography business. She envisioned an illustration of one of her photographs screen-printed onto a shirt, so we sifted through her favorite shots and landed on a one-of-a-kind moment of a spider atop the nose of snake.
Approach
I started by drawing the snake and spider, using Hutcheson's photograph as a reference. One additional request she had was to include a Baobab tree and a Milky Way sky in the foreground. After researching Baobabs and their many forms, I decided to use one whose roots twisted and curled, mimicking that of a snake. The viewer's eyes are meant to bounce around the moonlit safari from the snake, through the singing grassland, to the tree, and up to the moon. After constructing the bulk of the composition with pencil and paper, I scanned the image and began incorporating color, toggling between Procreate and Photoshop.
